Gardening Services

Gardening services are available for both private and corporate use in urban areas as well as in the countryside. A company dealing in gardening can be specialized in one or more gardening services, such as lawn mowing, tree care, flower plantation and many others. Lots of such businesses advertise on the Internet, but not all of them provide a good level of reliability.

There are organizations and official associations that guarantee the quality of gardening services provided by their members. This is the case with the Tree Care Industry Association that offers not only services but accreditation, support and regulatory standards along with all sorts of information for consumers. Nevertheless, lots of home businesses provide quality gardening services without being part of these associations. They usually build their reputation locally and they find customers by word of mouth.

People use gardening services because they lack the time, the skills and the patience to take care of their property, but they still want to enjoy nice flowers, freshly cut grass and even a special landscape. In fact, landscape design represents one of the most expensive of all gardening services because it can be handled only by specialized professionals and it requires investments in outdoor lighting systems, garden furniture, water pumps, and much more.

Gardening services involve more than just trimming the hedge. Soil sampling is one type of complex service that is available with scientific institutes only. Thus, home owners collect a sample of their garden soil and send it to the institute for analysis. They receive a full report on the type of soil together with the right methods to enhance it and grow plants in it. For such gardening services you have to inquire at local university centers, research labs or governmental agencies.

Insect control is also present among the more numerous gardening services provided in such research facilities. Just as in the case of soil, home owners, gardeners or farms send samples of insects and require their identification. This allows for a better management of the crops and maximizes the gardening efforts locally. Moreover, there are other customized gardening services that you may take advantage of on request.

Before deciding for a company to work with, contact several service providers, ask for quotes and information on all their gardening services. Then, by comparison you can identify the one that would be most suitable for your needs. Do not forget to inquire about the company’s history and check it at the Better Business Bureau!

Green House Gardening

Green house gardening allows for the cultivation of vegetables, ornamental plants and flowers that cannot be grown outside because of the climate conditions. To many enthusiasts green house gardening is a dream they hope to turn into reality one day. Here is what best defines such an occupation in the most general lines possible.

1.The green house is a chamber of plastic or glass that allows the light to get through to the plants while providing enough warmth to allow for the harmonious development regardless of the external weather conditions. Green house gardening is challenging by the high number of activities required to keep the green house operational.

2.Containers, hanging baskets and regular beds can be freely used for green house gardening purposes. Regardless of the size of the facility, you can make it decorative, lucrative or both. The equipment that is now available should enable the hobby or professional gardener to make the appropriate choices for cultivating all sorts of flowers, plants, fruit trees or vegetables all year round.

3.There are many purposes for green house gardening. Some people want to extend the availability of seasonal crops such as strawberries or tomatoes for instance. Others are just interested in the propagation of seeds and the retention of less sensitive plants during the cold season. And finally, a warm green house could be specialized strictly in the cultivation and display of rare plants.

There are three types of green house gardening usually depending on the temperature of the controlled atmosphere inside the chamber.

-Cold green house gardening is pretty cheap but limited. It depends on the accumulation of heat inside the greenhouse in summer thus accelerating the growth of the crops inside. In very humid weather, such greenhouses trap a lot of humidity inside which could be detrimental to the plants.

-Cool green house gardening is much more common. Normally a steady temperature is preserved by using some sort of heating system. Many plants are thus capable to resist throughout winter without any inconvenience. The temperature inside is around 45F.

-Warm green house gardening is conducted at temperatures of 55F or higher and it is usually specific to the cultivation of exotic plants, fruits and vegetables. Warm greenhouses are more specialized and they are generally used in professional gardening.

Lots of other features can be identified for the above mentioned categories but they should be studied in particular with all the issues that derive from them.

Indoor Gardening

There is hardly any home or company untouched by the beauty of flowers and decorative plants. Indoor gardening is not necessarily an art, as it takes little time and effort. There are however people who have pushed the concept of indoor gardening a lot further, coming to actually grow vegetables inside. Since most such gardens use artificial light, they have the major advantage of not having to destroy weeds to often. Plus, the condition of the soil can be supported a lot better without the direct influence of the elements.

Indoor gardening depends on containers or pots made either from plastic or from ceramic materials. Plastic has the inconvenience of getting hot, which is why most gardeners prefer ceramic materials with some form of drainage at the bottom to let water flow away. Most challenges with indoor gardening comes from the preparation of the soil, although opinions are greatly divided. The ingredients should include peat moss, native soil and sharp coarse sand in different proportions.

Another type of soil mix for indoor gardening contains forest mulch, perlite, silica and sand in an equal volume. The conditions change if your vegetables grow in hanging containers because you have to keep them lightweight normally relying on some premixed soils. From this point of view, indoor gardening is a bit more expensive as the costs for the soil mixture can be an issue for the average budget. But, once again, it all depends on the extent you give to indoor gardening.

Besides soil, another aspect that requires your attention is that of the containers. They should have proper draineage and aeration. It is important to leave some two inches of space between the margin of the contain and the soil so as to be able to water without problems. As for the gardening cycles, most people will stick to the same routine as with outdoor gardening. The only difference here is that you can grow your plants directly from seeds because there are not weather changes to prevent plant growth.

Cherry tomatoes and herbs are among the favorite to grow by indoor gardening. They look nice, they are very attractive and the fragrance is great. Chives, mint and rosemary will delight your senses while you are working on your little indoors garden. You can enhance the beauty of the garden by improvising with the arrangement of plant stands, tables, shelves and the rest of the ‘furniture’.

Freeze Your Herbs for Cooking

Shop WindowBox.com Now!

I like to cook with fresh herbs. Don’t you? Not only do they taste nice, they smell wonderful too! It’s easy to use fresh herb plants too. Just clip a few sprigs from the nearest herb and mix in with your other ingredients.

But what do you do when it’s winter and fresh herbs are few and far between?

Try freezing as a fresh alternative to drying your herbs because it is a simpler and better way to keep your herbs fresh. In three steps you can set them aside for future recipes—raise them, harvest them and freeze them. It’s not important to chop them before you freeze them. Even after they are frozen, you will not have to chop them to cook with them.

If you do want your herbs measured before you freeze your herbs, you can dice them up and freeze your herbs in ice trays. Simply fill each compartment of the ice cube tray almost to the top with chopped basil or whatever other plant you want to freeze and add water. Put these cubes into the freezer bags and later, when you’re ready mix a few cubes into your soups, stews and other meals.

Here are some herbs that really keep their flavor and taste when frozen:

  • Basil: Remove the leaves from the stem just before the flowers of your basil when you’re ready to harvest them and dry them. Put the dried leaves into a freezer bag so that you can use them in the future. You can also avoid the drying out part and put your herbs straight away into the freezer. Another way to keep your basil is to layer your herbs in the bottom of a plastic container and cover your herbs with extra virgin olive oil, which will both keep and bring out the flavor. Your basil will last for several months like this.
  • Parsley: It is not just a pretty garnish; you can use parsley in any Italian dish.  Parsley will work well in almost any Italian meal. Nobody appreciates parsley for it’s positive features. It cannot help it if the other Italian herb plants (like oregano, basil and garlic) have stronger, more memorable flavors.  Parsley works hard to help other herbs taste better. Mix it into any dish (usually near the end of the cooking process) and it will make the rest of the herb plants that much nicer. I put whole leaves in a freezer bag and lay it flat until it’s frozen, usually by putting something on top of my bags for a few days in the freezer. When you take out the bag to use the herb, just scrunch up the bag in your hand. No need for a knife.
  • French Tarragon: If you plan to over-winter your French tarragon plant, be sure not to trim it back too much. Of course it’s better to use the leaves fresh, but you can tuck some of these leaves into a freezer bag and they will get you through the winter months. Spice up your chicken or fish dishes with this herb. French Tarragon is good for making vinegars, cream sauces and mustards.

Once you put the herb plants in the freezer bag, write the name of the plant on the outside of the bag and the date so that you will be able to tell similar herb plants apart.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.
